Marriott has previously described China as its biggest market. Chinese troops marched into Tibet in to bring the region under Beijing s control while Hong Kong and Macau were returned to China in the s after colonial rule, although both are governed separately from the mainland..China shuts Marriott s website over Tibet and Taiwan error. China has shut down the Chinese websites of Marriott International for a week, after the firm listed Tibet and others as separate countries. Beijing considers self ruling Taiwan to be a breakaway province and Tibet is governed as an autonomous region..The hotel chain apologises, saying it "respects and supports" Chinese sovereignty..It asked to respondents to select their country of residence, and gave Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as options alongside China. Although each of these territories have unique historical contexts, China claims sovereignty over all four. Macau and Hong Kong were under Portuguese and British rule .
